Exercise Bikes ~ Upright Exercise Bikes & Recumbent Exercise Bikes
Exercise bikes ~ The ever popular home & gym fitness equipment solution
Why buy an exercise bike?
Anybody can use them - from a beginner to a professional athlete. Anybody of any age can use them too. Exercise bikes are particularly easy on your joints - hips, knees and ankles. Exercise bikes start at the cheaper end of the fitness equipment & gym equipment market, making them ideal entry-level cardiovascular exercise machines. Exercise bikes only take up a small amount of space too, ideal for your own living room, study or home fitness gym. Most exercise bikes can be self-assembled within the hour so you can start to exercise shortly after delivery.
Exercise bikes fall into two categories;
Upright Exercise Bikes
These exercise bikes support the more conventional seating position, as experienced on a mountain or road bike. They allow you to complete an intense workout as you can stand up & pedal as if you are cycling up an incline. Upright exercise bikes are ideal for a short, vigorous cardio vascular workouts as well as the long distance ride.
Upright exercise bikes are generally cheaper then recumbent exercise bikes and they will take up less room in your home fitness gym or commercial gym.
Recumbent Exercise Bikes
The recumbent exercise bikes have the advantage of comfort. You sit in a reclined position with good back support & your feet pedalling out in front of you. Workouts tend to feel more relaxed && comfortable, however, these types of exercise bikes are still very efficient at improving fitness & burning calories and actually work a few different muscle groups to an upright exercise bike. The abdominal muscles get used more due to the effort of keeping your legs in a parallel position to the floor. This position also helps keep your blood pressure down therefore making the recumbent exercise bike the ideal choice if you suffer from high blood pressure.
Recumbent exercise bikes are regarded as safer to use if you have problems with balance than an upright exercise bike as you are seated in a supportive bucket type seat.

Exercise bikes & adjustable resistance
Exercise bikes provide adjustable resistance in one of two ways - a tension belt or magnetic resistance. Magnetic resistance is the preferred choice for more expensive exercise bikes as the resistance is smoother. They are also quieter in operation and you can choose from manual adjustment, found on cheaper exercise bikes or by push button control found on the more expensive electro magnetic models.
Exercise bikes & heart rate monitors
The main purpose of exercising on an exercise bike (unless you are using it for rehabilitation) is to increase your heart rate. Most bikes will have a pulse grip point on the handlebars, which monitors your heart rate while exercising & display this information on the display console. Exercise bikes at the top end of the market will offer pulse driven workouts - the exercise bike will adjust your workout intensity based on readings from the built in heart rate monitor. A very useful feature.
Exercise bikes & programmes
Expect a minimum of 3 built-in workout programmes from your exercise bike & when you become more familiar with the equipment & your fitness, you can program workouts yourself. Both during & at the end of your workout, you may read information on your heart rate, duration & distance of your exercise and total calories burned.
