Protein is a vital nutrient in all exercise, toning, aerobic and muscle building regimes. Protein is used not only to build and repair muscle tissue whether for growth or just recovery, but to repair and maintain all the tissues in the body - hair, nails, skin, connective tissue, internal organs etc. For muscle growth to occur a minimum of 2g of protein per kg of bodyweight must be consumed every day to give the body enough protein to maintain health and have enough left to build new muscle tissue. For a 90kg man this equates to 180g of protein per day. However, to consume this much protein is quite difficult and this is where protein supplements are vital. Whey protein is the best and fastest acting protein and is the choice of most competitive athletes. Slower digesting proteins like the Sci-Mx GRS (gradual release system) and Super-Quad are used where muscle growth is not the primary aim but a good protein source for recovery and health is required.
