Choosing the correct multi gym
- Weight Stack: Multi gyms consist of disks or blocks of concrete filled plastic or solid cast iron weights, called the weight stack, which is attached to cables, levers or a pulley system. A multi gym weight range should include weights light enough for weaker users and those concentrating on muscle toning, not muscle building, as well as heavier weights that will challenge the strongest of weight lifters (typical stacks range from 10lb (5kg) up to a 210lb (100kg)).
Changing the amount of weight you exercise with on your multi gym is easy. Simply insert a pin up or down the weight stack (or add another plate on plate-loading models). Check the resistance is right for you - make sure can comfortably perform 10 repetitions of an exercise without straining your muscles. - Will it satisfy your fitness requirements? Your multi-gym offers at least a dozen different options & exercises to work all of your major muscle groups. Most multi gyms will come with a wall chart showing you all of the exercises that are available & which muscle groups each one exercises.
- Will it fit? If you are looking to purchase a multi gym as an item for your home fitness gym, check to see it's not too tall, wide or deep to fit where you want your multi gym to go.
How to use a multi gym sensibly
- Take time to familiarise yourself with the range of exercises offered from your multi gym. Practise each exercise with a light-weight & make a note of the most comfortable position for each particular exercise.
- You should start slowly with your multi gym & use lighter weights and stop if you feel pain in your muscles.
- You should not do weight lifting on the same muscle groups on consecutive days. Muscles need time to recover and it is this recovery time that allows muscles to develop & grow.
