Rowing machines ~ low impact calorie burning fitness equipment

Rowing machines are designed to simulate the action of an Olympic rowing boat - think Sir Steve Redgrave, this type of home & gym fitness equipment is one of the best fat-burning and muscle toning workouts you can experience. Rowing machines exercise the muscles of the upper body, arms, chest and back and the large muscles of the lower body. They also provide an excellent aerobic workout.

Rowing machines used to resemble a boat with oars but never quite simulated the true feel of rowing on water until Concept 2 developed the air rower. The Concept 2 simulated the feel of the stroke experienced in a boat and changed the design on rowing machines forever. Today there are many good rowing machines to choose from. Some even use water and not only give a wonderful feel but the lovely sound of rushing water too.

Why choose a rowing machine?

  • If you prefer adopting a rhythmic style while exercising, then rowing machine's are ideal for you as they promote a smooth controlled action throughout each rowing stroke
  • Rowing machines exercise the shoulders, arms, hips, thighs abdomen & ankles simultaneously - not many pieces of fitness equipment can achieve this!
  • Used correctly a quality rowing machine provides a low impact workout - a gentle stroke will put minimal strain on your hips, knees and ankle joints
  • Rowing machines use to have a problem with size, they can be up to 250cm long, however with folding versions & others that can stand upright, when not in use they can now be one of the most compact pieces of fitness equipment in your home, useful if space is an issue in your flat or house
  • Ultimately, it's the fat burning potential offered by regular use of a rowing machine which makes them a very popular choice of fitness equipment at the gym & a popular choice for your home gym. Research has shown that an hour on a rowing machine can burn up an impressive 800 calories.

Rowing machines fall broadly into three categories

Magnetic rowing machines
This type of rowing machine provides the user with a smooth action. They are silent in operation due to the magnetic braking system producing no friction.

Air rowing machines (also known as fan-wheel rowing machines)
This type of rowing machine relies on resistance provided by air. When you execute a stroke a fan wheel spins. The harder the stroke the faster the blades on the wheel spin, which in turn increases the airflow, generating more resistance. More noisy than magnetic rowers but simulate a real feel of rowing on water.

Water rowing machines
If you are serious about rowing, then a water rowing machine is the solution for you. The idea behind water resistant rowing machines is to simulate the dynamics of a boat in water. Apart from the soothing sound of the water, these machines offer an almost silent workout.

Additional information about rowing machines

rowing machine electronic console An electronic LCD console is an important feature for any rowing machine as the digital readout gives you useful information such as your rowing speed, heart rate, distance travelled, stroke rate and you can also set & view your tempo. At Fitness Options we only sell rowing machines with electronic consoles.

The Heart rate monitor detects your pulse, usually through the handgrips integrated into the handle you pull on when performing each stroke. Telemetric heart rate monitoring is also available on the better quality rowing machines.

Rowing machines are excellent at strengthening the muscles of the lower back and can help build a solid core. However if you suffer from lower back problems, particularly disc problems, then it is best to try a rowing machine before you buy and take professional advice if you are still unsure.
